Why should you take this webinar

Lots of people have strong opinions about the behaviour and wellbeing of boys, but how much of what they say is evidence-based? Tim Watson has worked in schools as a teacher since 1993 and as an educational psychologist since 2001. During this time, he has developed interests and knowledge in the social and emotional aspects of learning as well as in the areas of resilience, developmental trauma, identity and the lives lived by ‘care experienced’ children.  John Barry has been working since 2010 to improve the mental health of men and boys, researching and writing on various topics in this field. Both Tim and John have done exploratory research on how boys are taught about masculinity in UK classrooms. 

Attendees of this webinar will be taught by psychologists who have worked in and researched this topic area. Tim’s experience in schools and John’s research-based knowledge of male psychology provide a compelling combination of clinical insights and academic evidence.

Webinar Presenter Tim Watson

Tim has worked for over thirty years in the fields of education, social care and psychology. He is currently working as a self-employed Educational and Child Psychologist with families and schools, mainly in the Northwest of England. Prior to setting up his own practice, New Horizons Psychology Ltd, he was a senior psychologist in a local authority, also in the Northwest of England. Tim currently supervises a range of psychology, education, and safeguarding professionals. He is an accredited trainer by the CPD Certification Service and has delivered seminars and workshops at a regional and national level. Tim has been on the interview panel for the Doctorate in Educational Psychology course at the University of Manchester. He has been a contributor to the education psychology courses at Edge Hill University and has been an external reviewer for a ‘learning passport’ developed for refugees and ‘a positive psychology’ intervention for teenagers. Tim has been a facilitator of conflict transformation training (Integrative Complexity - IC). IC has been developed and licenced through the University of Cambridge and is focused on reducing radicalisation and extremism. Tim has recently been part of a British Psychological Society (BPS) working group, who are developing the national supervision guidelines for all fields of psychology. Tim is passionate about ensuring that current research and ‘lived experience’ helps to promote understanding of the needs of men and boys within education, health, government policies and media representation. He has been attending and supporting the male psychology focused conferences that have taken place in the UK for the last ten years. For the last couple of years, he has been on the committee for the Male Psychology section of the British Psychological Society (BPS). Tim has recently given presentations on the topic of ‘retelling the message of toxic masculinity’ at a school, regional and national level, including the BPS Male Psychology Section annual conference in November 2023.

Webinar Presenter John Barry

John Barry is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS), Honorary Lecturer in Psychology at University College London, clinical hypnotherapist and author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications on a variety of topics in psychology and health, including many on male psychology. John co-authored, with consultant clinical psychologist Martin Seager, the BPS practice briefing on ‘Psychological interventions to help male adults’ (BPS, 2022). He is also co-author (with Louise Liddon) of the first BPS textbook on male psychology, ‘Perspectives in Male Psychology: An Introduction’ (Wiley, 2021), co-editor of the ‘Palgrave Handbook of Male Psychology and Mental Health’ (Palgrave, 2019), and author of ‘Psychological Aspects of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome’ (Palgrave, 2019), which is about a condition characterised by elevated testosterone levels in women. John is co-editor (with Louise Liddon) of Male Psychology magazine (ISSN 2755-1466, Online). John co-founded The Centre for Male Psychology with Louise Liddon. He co-founded the Male Psychology Section of the BPS with Martin Seager. He was the Honorary Secretary of the BPS Male Psychology Section (2018-2019) and the Chair from 2019-2021. John was the lead organiser of the Male Psychology Conference which was held at UCL from 2014–2019, and the first two BPS Male Psychology Conferences (2020-2021).
