Why should you take this webinar?

If you are a therapist, you might wonder why most of your clients are women rather than men. One of the main reasons is that therapy is perceived as being all about talking about your feelings, which doesn’t appeal so much to men. Many men would rather ‘fix the problem’, and because hypnosis is seen as delivering solutions, such as stress reduction, in the quickest way possible, hypnotherapists usually find they have a higher proportion of male clients than do therapists of other kinds e.g. psychotherapists, counsellors etc.

Although hypnotherapy is not for everyone and can't be used for all issues (e.g. suicidality, clinical depression, psychosis), hypnosis is arguably as rapid, effective and safe a form of support you can find for helping with everyday issues such as stress, insomnia, anger, smoking / vaping etc.  Once clients get over the common myths and misconceptions about hypnosis, they can enjoy the benefits.

In this webinar attendees will learn what hypnosis is (and what it isn’t) and how you can apply simple but effective techniques to your work with men. You don’t need to abandon your existing way of working, you can – within your usual professional guidelines - simply add these techniques to the other methods you already know are safe and effective.

Webinar Presenter

This webinar is brought to you by Dr John Barry of the Centre for Male Psychology.

Clinical Hypnotherapist John Barry

John Barry is a Chartered Psychologist and Associate Fellow of the British Psychological Society (BPS), Honorary Lecturer in Psychology at University College London, clinical hypnotherapist and author of over 70 peer-reviewed publications on a variety of topics in psychology and health, including three on hypnotherapy and many on male psychology. After training with the London College of Clinical Hypnosis, and receiving a diploma in Clinical Hypnosis (DHyp) from the Psychotherapy and Hypnosis Training Association at Regent’s College (now Regent’s University), Dr Barry started his hypnotherapy practice in London in 1999. Due to his growing interest in the connection between psychology and health, he undertook an MSc in Health Psychology (University of Westminster). This led to a PhD in Biological / Health Psychology (City University London) after which he produced several peer-reviewed research papers while at University College London (UCL) and became a Member of the British Society of Clinical and Academic Hypnosis. John co-authored, with consultant clinical psychologist Martin Seager, the BPS practice briefing on ‘Psychological interventions to help male adults’ (BPS, 2022). He is also co-author (with Louise Liddon) of the first BPS textbook on male psychology, ‘Perspectives in Male Psychology: An Introduction’ (Wiley, 2021), co-editor of the ‘Palgrave Handbook of Male Psychology and Mental Health’ (Palgrave, 2019), and author of ‘Psychological Aspects of Polycystic Ovary Syndrome’ (Palgrave, 2019), which is about a condition characterised by elevated testosterone levels in women. John is co-editor (with Louise Liddon) of Male Psychology magazine (ISSN 2755-1466, Online). John co-founded The Centre for Male Psychology with Louise Liddon. He co-founded the Male Psychology Section of the BPS with Martin Seager. He was the Honorary Secretary of the BPS Male Psychology Section (2018-2019) and the Chair from 2019-2021. John was the lead organiser of the Male Psychology Conference which was held at UCL from 2014–2019, and the first two BPS Male Psychology Conferences (2020-2021). John is also the presenter on Centre for Male Psychology training courses and hosts the Centre for Male Psychology webinars.

Frequently Asked Questions

Got a question? You might find the answer here:

  • Should I already be familiar with male psychology before joining this webinar?

The webinar is open to anyone with a genuine interest in helping men. Depending on how familiar you are with male psychology is it recommended to gain some foundational knowledge if possible. The following is a list of four suggestions, but is not compulsory (copy and paste the links into your browser): 1/ This brief introduction to male psychology - https://www.centreformalepsychology.com/what-is-male-psychology 2/ Our free magazine (Male Psychology) which hosts a range of articles by a variety of experts on different male psychology topics - https://www.centreformalepsychology.com/male-psychology-the-magazine 3/ For deeper insights, there is our BPS (British Psychological Society) textbook on male psychology - https://www.centreformalepsychology.com/wiley-textbook-new-perspectives-in-male-psychology 4/ Our e-learning course (approved by the BPS for CPD) - https://thecentreformalepsychology.thinkific.com/courses/IntroductiontoMalePsychologyandMentalHealth

  • Do I need to be trained in hypnotherapy before attending this course?

You don’t need any formal qualifications in hypnotherapy to attend the webinar – it is open to anyone with a genuine interest in men’s mental health. We think it will, however, be of most benefit to those providing practitioner services, and the techniques should not be used by people without a recognised qualification in a psychological therapy of some kind (clinical psychology, counselling, coaching etc). On this webinar you will learn about some simple but effective techniques that will add a new dimension to the therapy work you already do. As per your normal professional guidelines, you should discuss any changes to your practice with your clinical supervisor. Please note however that this webinar is not a substitute for a foundational therapy training, or to be used as a stand-alone form of therapy in the absence of other formal training. Techniques should be used by practitioners as part of their usual care with their normal level of professional responsibility. These responsibilities vary by country and region (for example US state), and it is the duty of the practitioner to be aware of what these are. Note also that hypnosis is not suitable for everyone, and the contraindications will be discussed in full in the webinar.

  • Will there be a recording?

Booked a ticket and now unable to join us? A recording of the webinar will also be made available to registrants for 2 week. Please make sure you register ahead of the webinar to access the recording.

  • What does 'Continuing Professional Development (CPD)’ mean?

Continuing, or continuous, professional development (CPD), can be broadly defined as any type of learning you undertake which increases your knowledge, understanding and experiences of a subject area or role. After attending the webinar you will receive a CPD certificate from The Centre for Male Psychology which will state the CPD in hours (rather than points). Attending this webinar does not qualify the learner to practice psychology, teach psychology, or imply to others that they are qualified to do so by virtue of having taken this webinar. As with all CPD, you will need to discuss specific eligibly criteria with your supervisor/HR manager regarding your specific profession.

  • Who can sign up for this webinar? I don't live in the UK, can I still buy this webinar?

Anyone 18 years or older can take this webinar. You can still buy this webinar if you live outside the UK. Please note this webinar will be delivered in English and you may be charged a transaction fee by your card provider if paying in a different currency to GBP. *Pricing at the checkout is inclusive of any applicable taxes. You will also need to be able to take responsibility for your own learning and you will need to have access to, and be able to use either a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer to access the webinar which is hosted on Thinkific and delivered by Zoom (see technical requirements in FAQ below).

  • Why is the focus of this webinar on males? Is this webinar suitable for those wanting to find out more about Transgender Men or Transgender Women?

While males and females are very similar in many ways, there are differences, and some of these differences can make all the difference. In recent decades, gender studies and women’s studies have focused mainly on women, or on male issues from a feminist perspective. In recent years there has been significant increase in webinars and trainings focusing on transgender men and women. This webinar takes a different approach, and focuses specifically on the mental health of men in general, from a male-centred perspective.

  • I'm having trouble buying this webinar, who can I contact?

If you are having technical problems with the Thinkific platform e.g., signing up, logging in, getting the page to load etc., or problems using Zoom, then in the first instance please look at the next FAQ (below) for details relating to technical questions. If after this you are still experiencing an issue, please email us at [email protected] providing as much information as possible on the issue.

  • What are the technical requirements for this webinar?

You will need to have access to, and be able to use either a phone, tablet, laptop, or desktop computer to run the webinar. The webinar is live via Zoom, so be sure you have downloaded the latest version of Zoom to your device. In general, you should have no problems if you have a modern device to run the webinar on, but please check that whatever device (e.g. computer) you will be using to access the webinar has the necessary technical requirements: for Thinkific see, https://tinyurl.com/39bkbh4x (Please note that having a PDF plugin is not necessary for this webinar); For Zoom see http://tinyurl.com/4j4jjmuk The webinar is hosted on Thinkific, which does not need any additional software for you to download.
