Why you should take this course about masculinity

In recent years the field of masculinity research has expanded in new ways, extending what has been taught in universities for decades. You can stay on top of these developments and use these new insights to improve your knowledge and the work you do. Learning to analyse and evaluate relevant theories is an invaluable skill and is a key part of what you will learn on this course. This short course is an ideal opportunity to learn something new, even if it’s a topic that you feel you are already familiar with.

Many people think masculinity offers an important way to understand men and boys. If your work (or personal life) involves men or boys, especially if you are making decisions that impact their lives, it is important that your view of masculinity is realistic, or else the outcomes of your decisions might not be what you expected.

You should think of this course as part of your wider toolkit in developing your awareness and insights into men and boys.

How will this course equip you with valuable skills?

Many people think they know all about masculinity, but how much of what they have learned is incomplete? This course provides participants the opportunity to:

  • Develop critical and analytical skills regarding theories of masculinity (such as RW Connell’s ‘hegemonic masculinity’, and ideas from the field of positive psychology), and terminology such as masculine norms, masculinities, traditional masculinity, toxic masculinity, positive masculinity, fragile masculinity, patriarchy theory, social construction, and evolution,.

  • Develop skills in identifying how masculinity impacts the lives of men and boys and the people around them.

  • Develop skills in relation to the practical application of ideas about masculinity, for example, in psychology, healthcare, the military, crime, sport, relationships, education, the media art and politics.

Course Outline

Here is a brief overview of what you will learn in this course. The second module has been designed to build on the content of the first module.

Week 1: 5th February 2025
 (Masculinity in Theory)

How masculinity is expressed in different cultures and in different historical periods, and current theories and concepts of masculinity (e.g. hegemonic masculinity; toxic masculinity; positive masculinity).

-----------------

Week 2: 12th February 2025
(Masculinity in Practice).

How concepts of masculinity inform how we approach mental health and social policy, and how masculinity is depicted in the media.

What will this course help you achieve?

Upon successful completion of this course, it is intended that you will have achieved the following:

  • An increased understanding of what masculinity is, based on historical and cross-cultural research, and how it is portrayed in the media and elsewhere.

  • An increased awareness of how different theories of masculinity suggest different ways men and boys should be treated in various situations, for example in therapy or the legal system.

  • An increased appreciation of the complexity of theories related to masculinity, and how to identify what makes most sense to you.
