Hypnotherapy and Wellbeing Coaching with Dr John Barry

Many people want an approach that is effective, safe, and fast-acting — and indeed those are the three things that first inspired my interest in hypnotherapy. Since qualifying in 1999, I’ve worked as a chartered psychologist, researcher, and author, helping people enhance their wellbeing, focus, and relationships.

My approach combines clinical hypnotherapy with deep relaxation techniques and coaching-style methods, helping clients translate insight into practical, lasting change. I have particular expertise in men’s mental health and psychological aspects of PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), but work with adults across a wide range of challenges — from stress, anger and insomnia to increasing performance confidence to stopping smoking.

More About Hypnotherapy

  • What Is hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy uses deep relaxation and guided focus to help people make meaningful changes. It’s a natural, pleasant process — similar to daydreaming or being fully absorbed in a task. It's not a miracle cure, but there is a good evidence base for how well hypnotherapy works (including this research paper, https://tinyurl.com/2nz6r37t) by John Barry and colleagues). Many clients describe sessions as a reset for the mind, combining relaxation, evidence-based psychological techniques, and clear goal-setting. Each session is tailored to your needs — whether you’re aiming to reduce stress or insomnia, improve relationships, or make healthier habits.

  • Important information about contraindications

Hypnotherapy is safe for most people, but may not be suitable if you have epilepsy, bipolar disorder, or psychosis. If you have any of these issues, please consult your medical specialist before beginning hypnotherapy. If you are in crisis or feeling suicidal, contact Samaritans (UK 116 123) or your local emergency number, immediately. International emergency mental health numbers can be found here: https://blog.opencounseling.com/suicide-hotlines/

  • Myths about hypnosis

Because of the popularity of hypnosis in fiction and stage-shows, there are several myths about hypnosis, such as that people lose their self control, or will forget everything about the session, or will say or do things they don't want to under hypnosis. Be assured that none of this is true of a modern hypnotherapy session, where the aim is simply to help you make improvements to your life.

  • What are coaching-style methods?

An effective addition to hypnotherapy Alongside hypnotherapy, sessions may include structured goal-setting, practical tools, similar to wellbeing coaching. This makes the process more flexible to your changing needs, and many people find this combination of insight and structure helps them maintain progress between sessions and achieve results more efficiently. These non-hypnotherapy methods are also useful for people who can't use hypnosis due to having contraindicating conditions.

  • Why this approach works

Hypnotherapy offers access to a state of mind that helps people to overcome the obstacles to their goals. By combining evidence-based hypnosis with goal-setting and coaching-style strategies, sessions become both insightful and practical — similar to structured wellbeing coaching, but grounded in psychology and research.

What is Male Psychology?

Male Psychology can be considered the exploration of the complex, multifaceted experience of males, something often overlooked in the academic literature. Male psychology asks questions such as: what does existing research tell us about masculinity, and how best can we help with the mental health of men?
